On Monday, August 31, breadth across the Consumer Discretionary sector was exceptionally narrow, with only 14.9% of its S&P 500 members advancing. The cap-weighted sector slipped -0.4%, while the equal-weighted sector fell -1.3%, demonstrating that top holdings shielded the broader group from a steeper drop. The sector's exchange-traded fund, Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY), declined -0.5% to close at $116.60. While a strong gain from Tesla Inc (+5.5%) helped limit losses, weakness across most components, led by Wynn Resorts Limited (-4.2%), kept the sector in negative territory.
The broader market retreated as military strikes in the Strait of Hormuz drove crude oil prices higher. Rising fuel costs quickly rekindle inflation worries and squeeze household budgets, directly threatening discretionary consumer spending. Market sentiment was further dampened by rising Treasury yields and expectations of tighter monetary policy.
Company-specific developments added further divergence among sector constituents. Retail heavyweight Amazon faced selling pressure after the Federal Trade Commission and 22 state attorneys general filed an antitrust lawsuit, alleging the company inflated advertising auction fees. In contrast, Tesla advanced ahead of its anticipated Cybercab robotaxi event. Gains also extended to Ulta Beauty Inc (+3.8%), supported by its recent quarterly financial results and raised full-year forecast.
The sector's pullback aligned with a cautious session across equities, where 2 of the 11 sectors rose. Over the past month, XLY has gained +0.4%, but Monday's action showed renewed pressure across retail and leisure components. The sharp gap between the cap-weighted -0.4% move and the equal-weighted -1.3% decline underscores that selling was widespread beneath the surface.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
