- Our read: EasyAlpha grades Humana Inc D against its industry peers in the S&P 500, indicating below-average quality as solid growth contends with weak profitability.
- The day: Shares closed +11.3% at $430.76 after federal regulators restored higher quality ratings across the insurer's Medicare Advantage plans.
- Watching: The next quarterly earnings report scheduled for Friday, November 6.
Humana shares jumped on Friday, delivering the stock's second-largest daily gain over the past year and its largest single-session advance since Tuesday, January 27. Trading volume reached 3.9x its typical 20-session level as the price moved past its previous 52-week high of $428.88. The sharp advance followed annual quality score releases from Washington, where federal health officials updated plan quality ratings.
In the updated Medicare Advantage data, 95% of Humana members are now in plans earning four stars or higher for 2027. Management added further reassurance on the day by reaffirming FY2026 adjusted EPS guidance of at least $9.00 per share.
Despite Friday's rally, Humana brought a D quality grade into the session from EasyAlpha relative to its industry peers in the S&P 500. Historically, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and carry a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. While the star ratings rebound addresses a critical regulatory concern, EasyAlpha's evaluation reflects financial conditions before Friday's trading, where the company's underlying fundamentals remain under strain.
The company's strongest scored attribute is growth, supported by recent quarterly revenue growth of +26.2% year over year. The primary concern in the profile is profitability. Humana generated a profit margin of 0.9% and a return on equity of 6.9%.
The market has nevertheless embraced a full recovery story. The shares sit 166.1% above their 52-week low, leaving the stock +68.2% so far this year. Humana now trades at a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 38.2 and a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 24.3. Friday's jump pushed the price 1.6% above the average analyst price target of $423.74, even though 50.0% of those ratings remain at buy. With expectations running ahead of the average target, any delay in converting plan ratings into bottom-line profits could test investor patience.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
