The Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund trading under ticker XLI, closed +0.8% at $169.96 on Friday, October 2. Breadth was positive across the group, with 62.5% of member stocks advancing as 11 of the 11 sectors rose across the broader market. Cap-weighted gains of +0.7% edged past the equal-weighted gain of +0.6%, showing that the largest constituents did more of the work on the day, while 34.6% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. That advance took place as a new employment report eased inflation worries and supported risk appetite across equity markets.
Specific company moves led the sector's performance. United Rentals Inc paced gainers with a move of +4.5% after an analyst note called recent selling a buying opportunity following dealership shifts. Power generation equipment specialist Generac Holdings Inc also moved higher, closing +4.3% as interest continued around its data center power supply agreements. Separately, Caterpillar announced plans to invest approximately $1 billion in a new manufacturing facility. On the downside, Leidos Holdings Inc was the session's primary laggard, closing -3.4%, though our sources show no reported catalyst behind the decline.
The day's gains offer a pause in an otherwise choppy stretch for industrial shares. Over the past month, XLI is -1.6%, and the fund is -2.5% over the past 100 sessions. Across the broader supply chain, structural steel producers announced a $50 per ton price increase taking effect for October orders. Over longer horizons, however, the fund remains +3.3% over six months and +10.2% over the past twelve months, preserving its broader upward trend even as intermediate performance has cooled.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
