The Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector under the ticker XLI, closed +0.9% on Tuesday, October 6 with solid internal breadth. Across the sector, 69.6% of member stocks advanced during the session. Performance was driven primarily by larger holdings, as the cap-weighted sector return of +0.9% exceeded the equal-weighted return of +0.7%. High-quality companies remain a minority of the portfolio, with only 40.1% of the fund's graded weight landing in stocks graded A or B. The advance took place amid widespread market strength where 10 of the 11 sectors rose, supported as falling Treasury yields and retreating crude prices eased pressure across equities.

Specialized engineering and electrical contractors led the sector's leaderboard. Comfort Systems USA Inc finished +6.1%, while EMCOR Group Inc closed +5.8%, though our sources show no company-specific catalysts reported for either gainer during the session.

Aerospace and defense companies also provided support during the session. Boeing secured a $14.7 billion subcomponent contract from Lockheed Martin to triple its production of missile seekers over seven years, supporting long-term defense manufacturing capacity. Manufacturing news also included Sherwin-Williams completing an expansion of its Statesville facility into its largest plant in North America. In contrast, freight and logistics providers lagged the group, as CH Robinson Worldwide Inc finished -4.0% with our sources showing no reported driver behind the decline.

Even with $31.9 billion committed to the sector, Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund remains in a short-term pause despite the day's gain. The fund sits -2.1% over the past month and -1.7% over the past 100 sessions. Over longer horizons, the broader sector trend remains positive, with XLI posting +0.7% over the past six months and +10.6% over the past twelve months.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
