On Friday, September 4, the Industrials sector proved to be one of the few bright spots in the broader market, where 3 of the 11 sectors rose. The sector closed +0.4% as 63.4% of its member stocks advanced. The exchange-traded fund Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) finished +0.4% at $175.24, supported by gains from Vertiv Holdings Co (+4.4%) and Honeywell Aerospace Inc (+3.9%) even as Equifax Inc (-6.3%) dropped. Across the companies EasyAlpha grades in the fund, 49.1% of the portfolio weight sits in stocks with A or B quality grades. The sector held its ground on a session when broader equity markets retreated after a government report showed nonfarm payrolls rose by 162,000 in August. That stronger-than-anticipated labor data pushed Treasury yields higher and raised prospects of an interest rate hike.
Company announcements across aerospace and defense helped support the sector. Pratt & Whitney, a business unit of RTX, announced a $25 million investment to expand precision parts manufacturing in Niepolomice, Poland. Defense contractors also announced new awards, with General Dynamics winning $249 million in U.S. military contracts. In addition, L3Harris Technologies completed the first batch of F-16 Viper Shield systems.
Weighting dynamics within the sector favored its larger constituents on the day. The cap-weighted sector return of +0.4% slightly exceeded the equal-weighted return of +0.3%, indicating that larger holdings generated more of the upward momentum. That quiet advance follows a choppy period for the group: XLI is -5.2% over the past month, while maintaining a +16.1% move over the past twelve months.
Quality remains balanced across the portfolio, with 49.1% of the fund's holdings graded A or B against industry peers. Historically, companies in these top two tiers have shown stronger fundamentals and carried a lower risk of large drawdowns during market downturns than companies graded D or E.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
