The Industrials sector saw breadth deteriorate sharply on Wednesday, October 7, with only 12.3% of its members closing in positive territory. The decline steered the exchange-traded fund Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) to end the session -2.2%. Inside the group, just 35.2% of graded holdings carry an A or B quality grade. Companies in those top tiers have stronger fundamentals and historically have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than those in the D or E tiers, leaving the broader sector exposed when sentiment turns. Heavyweights magnified the drop: the sector finished -2.1% while an equal-weighted basket closed -1.8%, pulled down by bellwether Caterpillar Inc, which ended -5.8%. Pressure on the equipment maker intensified after Truist lowered its price target over concerns about data center and power generation spending. Federal regulators also sought public comment on agricultural equipment manufacturing and distribution market practices.

The slump unfolded against a difficult backdrop across equities, where only 3 of the 11 sectors rose. Across the market, industrial shares fell and did not bounce when the 10-year Treasury yield did.

A handful of specialized companies bucked the selling. Verisk Analytics Inc led the sector, closing +2.1%. Defense contractors also saw supportive news flow, including a $14.7 billion seeker contract awarded for missile defense systems. That contract announcement and the advance in Verisk Analytics Inc were far too small to counter the drag from Caterpillar Inc across the cap-weighted fund.

The session extended a challenging stretch for the fund, which stands at -3.7% over the past month, though XLI remains at +8.8% over the past twelve months. As the primary vehicle tracking the sector, the fund illustrated how quickly weakness in a few cyclical leaders can overwhelm narrow breadth across the index.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
