The Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI), an exchange-traded fund tracking the Industrials sector, ended -0.1% on Wednesday, September 23 even as broader benchmarks slipped and 1 of the 11 sectors rose. Inside the sector, breadth provided quiet support, with 53.1% of its members advancing. Large-cap stability buffered the cap-weighted sector, which finished -0.1%, compared to -0.3% for the equal-weighted sector. EasyAlpha grades the stocks across the sector against their industry peers, with 43.5% of the fund's graded weight landing in companies rated A or B. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and historically have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than peers graded D or E. The session's primary drag came from Paychex Inc, which finished -8.8% after issuing cautious forward revenue guidance alongside its quarterly earnings.

Against the decline in payroll and business services, machinery and industrial suppliers anchored the group. Ingersoll Rand Inc led the sector's gainers, closing +3.3%, after management highlighted broadening customer demand and stronger orders across its segments. Fastenal Company finished +1.8%, providing steady support across industrial supplies. Industrial shares showed broader resilience across much of the session, even as rising Treasury yields and higher energy prices weighed on the wider stock market.

Corporate developments across the industrial sector added further support. Rail technology supplier Wabtec announced a fleet renewal agreement for locomotives and equipment with MRS Logistica. In packaging and manufacturing supply, several producers confirmed investments in domestic manufacturing expansions.

For investors tracking the group through XLI, the exchange-traded fund provides access at an expense ratio of 0.08%, managing $31.9 billion across industrial capital goods and commercial services. Closing at $170.10, the fund has pulled back -5.0% over the past month, but maintains +11.1% over the past twelve months. The session showed how diversified manufacturing heavyweights can cushion the fund when individual service names falter.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
