Across the Industrials sector on Monday, October 26, broad breadth and large-company leadership pushed the cap-weighted sector to a close of +1.4%, even as just 25.8% of the group's graded weight sits in companies carrying an A or B grade. Advancing stocks represented 72.5% of the sector's S&P 500 members, helping the cap-weighted group run ahead of an equal-weighted tracking at +1.1%. The Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund holding the sector under ticker XLI, closed +1.4% at $166.96. Our sources show no reported driver for the broader sector move, nor for Bloom Energy Corp, which closed +5.5%. Among individual movers, Comfort Systems USA Inc finished +7.1% as shares rebounded after an earlier drop following its third-quarter revenue release, while Lennox International Inc settled -2.8% with our sources showing no reported driver for the session's decline.

Other corporate announcements across the sector were company-specific. Teledyne FLIR secured a $48 million contract to deliver reconnaissance vehicle sensor upgrades for international military vehicles. The gains occurred on a session where 9 of the 11 sectors rose, giving the group broad macro tailwinds.

Every day EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Because only 25.8% of the fund's graded assets sit in those two top tiers, the Industrials group holds a heavy concentration of middle- and lower-tier companies.

The session's strength follows a choppy multi-month period for the sector. Over the past 100 sessions, XLI stands -5.2%, illustrating that single-day advances have taken place within a broader pattern of consolidation.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
