On Wednesday, September 9, the Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector under ticker XLI, closed -1.5% amid broad market selling. Only 9.8% of the sector's companies advanced during the session, and top-tier quality remains limited, with A- or B-graded companies making up 38.9% of the fund's holdings. Steep selling in data center equipment provider Vertiv Holdings Co (-9.6%) led the sector lower, heavily overshadowing modest gains from United Rentals Inc (+1.4%) and Verisk Analytics Inc (+1.4%). Broader equity markets fell as crude oil broke above $100 a barrel, fueling inflation concerns and pushing benchmark Treasury yields upward.

Macro Pressures and Sector Breadth

The drop in industrials occurred alongside widespread weakness across the equity market, where 1 of the 11 sectors rose. The sector's cap-weighted return was -1.5%, while the equal-weighted return was -1.4%. This slight difference reflects the fact that larger capitalization names experienced slightly more downward pressure than smaller peers.

Individual Drivers and Capital Projects

Individual company moves revealed distinct pockets of weakness across the sector. Data center equipment supplier Vertiv Holdings Co (-9.6%) led the decline following its recently announced agreement to acquire UtilityInnovation Group. Across the broader group, industrial and transportation shares faced pressure as wholesale-inflation concerns and rising energy costs weighed on market sentiment. At the same time, companies continued to introduce new commercial equipment, with Textron subsidiary Ransomes Jacobsen announcing a commercial rotary mower designed for large-area turf maintenance.

Fund Composition and Performance

Across the sector, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. While XLI provides low-cost access to the sector at an expense ratio of 0.08% across $31.9 billion in assets, its current composition leaves more than half the portfolio outside those higher-quality tiers. Over the past month, XLI has moved -6.9%, while it has returned +14.3% over the past twelve months.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
