Breadth inside the Industrials sector was narrow on Friday, August 28, with only 31.7% of its S&P 500 members advancing as the cap-weighted group fell -0.9%. The exchange-traded fund Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI) declined -0.9% to close at $177.14, falling behind a broader market where 5 of the 11 sectors rose. Selling was widespread across company sizes, with the equal-weighted sector falling -0.8%. The pullback followed a Jackson Hole address by Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, who warned that inflation remains above the central bank's two percent target. The hawkish tone drove Treasury yields higher and prompted investors to price in greater odds of another interest rate increase, as major stock indexes slipped on the day.

Company performance showed sharp dispersion across the group. The sector's weakest performer was Generac Holdings Inc (-6.8%), which dropped as the absence of an expected new hyperscaler agreement disappointed investors. In contrast, Uber Technologies Inc (+2.4%) and Equifax Inc (+2.1%) led the few gainers. Uber advanced following the formal release of its tender offer document for Delivery Hero and reports highlighting its expanding artificial intelligence usage without higher operational costs.

Over the past month, Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund has declined -0.7%. Every day EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Across the sector, 41.4% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B, the top quality tiers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. The remaining weight sits across average and lower tiers, reflecting broad quality dispersion across the sector.
