The exchange-traded fund Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) absorbed a difficult session on Friday, October 30, burdened by fragile breadth and a light concentration of high-quality holdings. EasyAlpha finds that just 25.5% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B against their industry peers. Market participation was equally narrow, with only 20.0% of the sector's stocks advancing. The fund was primarily dragged down by Intel Corporation, which closed -28.6%. The semiconductor manufacturer fell sharply after issuing fourth-quarter revenue and profit guidance and warning that weak personal computer demand would persist through at least the first half of 2027.

The broader Information Technology sector finished -4.4% on a cap-weighted basis, while an equal-weighted measure of the group matched that mark at -4.4%. When equal-weighted results mirror the cap-weighted benchmark, it indicates that selling pressure was uniform rather than isolated to a few mega-cap names. Technology stood out as one of the weakest areas of the market on a session where 5 of the 11 sectors rose. The fund itself closed -4.9% at $179.51.

Intel's plunge deepened broader anxiety across the tech industry regarding the durability of artificial intelligence spending. Hardware suppliers and data center operators have committed vast sums of capital, but investors have become increasingly sensitive to the costs and financial returns of the artificial intelligence buildout. Those worries have renewed scrutiny on concentration risks in major technology funds as infrastructure budgets expand while traditional end markets like personal computing remain sluggish.

Despite the widespread retreat, select software companies with demonstrated artificial intelligence revenue managed to gain ground. Godaddy Inc led the sector, closing +10.7% after topping quarterly profit expectations and raising its full-year revenue outlook toward the top end of its prior range. The company highlighted commercial momentum in its newer software offerings, reporting that annualized bookings for its Airo tool exceeded $100 million.

The day's retreat brings the fund to -9.3% over the past month. For tech investors, the session reinforced an ongoing division between software platforms showing immediate customer adoption and hardware suppliers wrestling with cyclical lulls and massive capital commitments.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
