  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades Intel Corporation E, down from C, placing it in the weakest tier among technology peers in the S&P 500 as solid growth contends with weak profitability.
  • The day: The stock fell 5.6% to $100.32 as a neutral analyst initiation and profit taking paused a multi-month rally.
  • Watching: Next quarterly financial results scheduled for Thursday, October 22.

Shares of Intel Corporation (INTC) fell 5.6% to close at $100.32 on Thursday, September 10, retreating from recent highs during a session of active trading across the semiconductor industry. The pullback followed a new analyst initiation at neutral with a $110 price target, pointing to constrained upside after the company's strong run.

The cautious brokerage view came alongside other company developments. Separately, Intel-backed programmable chip unit Altera is preparing an initial public offering aiming to raise more than $2 billion as early as this year. At the same time, lithography equipment maker ASML expanded its High-NA collaboration with Intel to accelerate advanced semiconductor manufacturing technologies as artificial intelligence demand grows.

Even with Thursday's decline, Intel Corporation has mounted a substantial recovery, advancing +171.9% so far this year. The stock trades 317.1% above its 52-week low of $24.05, sitting 29.5% under its 52-week high of $142.35. That surge has pushed the company's valuation to a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 57.5.

EasyAlpha grades Intel Corporation E, down from C in its prior assessment. That places Intel in the weakest tier among its industry peers in the S&P 500. While quarterly revenue increased +25.4% year over year to highlight improving growth, underlying profitability remains strained. A profit margin of 19.8% and a return on equity of 10.7% highlight the ongoing financial pressures facing the business.

Wall Street sentiment remains cautious despite the year's rally. Across 48 covering analysts, only 29.2% rate the stock a buy, though the average target of $115.88 still implies 15.5% upside from Thursday's close. Historically, companies graded D or E have experienced a higher risk of large drawdowns than peers graded A or B, which show stronger all-around fundamentals.

How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
