  • Our read: International Paper is graded D by EasyAlpha while 83.3% of 12 analyst ratings are buys, showing more warning signs than Consumer Cyclical peers in the S&P 500 as solid volume behavior is offset by weakness in earnings quality.
  • The day: Shares surged 6.8% to close at $34.09 after reports indicated private equity suitors are exploring buyout bids for its European packaging arm.
  • Watching: Third-quarter earnings scheduled for Wednesday, October 28.

Shares of International Paper surged 6.8% on Thursday, October 15, closing at $34.09 as trading volume climbed to 1.6x the 20-session average. The advance ranked as the stock's seventh-largest single-day gain over the past year. The sharp rally followed reports that private equity firms are preparing buyout bids for the packaging company's European operations.

The European division was previously scheduled for separation into an independent company named DS Smith plc, as detailed in official separation plans. Suitors including Lone Star and Atlas Holdings are now reportedly weighing offers that could value the business at less than $6 billion. That valuation would represent a substantial haircut on the unit's earlier acquisition price. Even so, the market welcomed the possibility because an outright cash divestiture could offer a faster path to streamline operations than a public listing. Management confirmed that it is reviewing preliminary unsolicited expressions of interest while continuing preparations to spin off the European operations onto the London Stock Exchange.

A potential divestiture of the European operations does not resolve the broader headwinds facing IP. Latest quarterly revenue contracted -2.2% year over year. Even with Thursday's jump, the stock trades 29.7% below its 52-week high, leaving it -13.5% so far this year. Wall Street remains broadly optimistic, with an average price target of $45.09 that sits 32.3% above Thursday's close.

EasyAlpha's metrics contrast with that Wall Street optimism. EasyAlpha grades International Paper D, indicating below-average quality with more warning signs than its Consumer Cyclical industry peers. In historical testing, companies graded A or B have shown stronger fundamentals and carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. While International Paper displays favorable volume behavior, its overall standing is held back by notable weakness in earnings quality. Thursday's surge reflects market relief over strategic options rather than verified improvement in underlying operations.

A tangible check on the core business will arrive soon. The company is scheduled to report its third-quarter financial results on Wednesday, October 28.

  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
