The Information Technology sector leaned on its largest holdings to absorb a narrow trading day on Thursday, September 24, with 63.8% of the sector's graded weight sitting in companies graded A or B. Market participation remained thin, as only 27.4% of member companies finished positive. While the cap-weighted sector closed -0.4%, an equal-weighted measure finished -1.1%, illustrating that mega-cap resilience kept losses contained. The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under the ticker XLK, closed -0.3% at $194.68. The session's widest swings were catalyzed by corporate deal reports, with GoDaddy and Gen Digital diverging following reports of an initial takeover approach.

The divergence between individual leaders and laggards reflected company-specific news. Gen Digital Inc. dropped to lead the sector lower, closing -12.0% after early-stage discussions to acquire GoDaddy raised investor concerns over potential equity dilution and balance-sheet leverage for a reported $12 billion transaction. In contrast, target Godaddy Inc rallied to lead the sector at +4.6%, while Cadence Design Systems Inc followed at +4.2%.

Elsewhere in the sector, semiconductor and software providers saw strategic developments. Qualcomm traded steadily after renewing its global patent license agreement with Apple into 2027 while introducing its latest Snapdragon mobile processors. Meanwhile, interactive software shares saw pressure as videogame stocks slipped after Meta Platforms announced new artificial intelligence tools for game creation.

The broader market tone remained restrained across the session, as 3 of the 11 sectors rose. Across broader time horizons, XLK has moved +7.1% over the past month and +46.9% over the past six months, though it stands -30.1% over the past twelve months.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
