The Industrials sector finished +0.4% on Friday, September 18, with gains concentrated in several large components while broader participation remained subdued. Only 46.3% of the sector's stocks advanced, keeping the equal-weighted return at +0.1%, while just 22.9% of the sector's graded weight sits in companies with A or B quality grades. Top contributors Comfort Systems USA Inc (+4.9%) and Eaton Corporation PLC (+3.7%) led the move, which helped offset a decline in Leidos Holdings Inc (-2.5%). While sector reporting included isolated corporate updates such as executive succession at Pratt & Whitney, our sources show no reported driver for the top gainers as industrials helped support a late-session rebound across major indexes, even as 3 of the 11 sectors rose.
The sector's primary tracking vehicle, the exchange-traded fund Industrial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLI), closed +0.4% at $169.72. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. With only 22.9% of the fund's graded weight in those two tiers, the group is predominantly composed of companies graded C, D, or E.
Friday's gain follows a challenging stretch for the sector. Over the past month, XLI stands at -6.7%, and over the past one hundred sessions its return is -0.7%. Over longer windows, the fund remains in positive territory, with a six-month return of +5.0% and a twelve-month return of +11.1%.
As the primary sector vehicle with $31.9 billion in net assets and an expense ratio of 0.08%, XLI provides low-cost tracking, but its cap-weighted design ties performance closely to its top holdings. The contrast between cap-weighted performance and underlying breadth illustrates the narrow nature of the sector's advance. When fewer than half of member stocks gain during an up session, index moves depend heavily on a small group of large-cap leaders.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
