Before the opening bell on Thursday, October 29, the market sits less than one percent below its record level. At the close on Wednesday, October 28, SPY finished at $772.31, leaving the broader market -0.9% from its peak. Across the major indexes, the S&P 500 recorded +0.3%, while the Nasdaq 100 stood at +0.6%. The Dow finished at +0.3%, and the Russell 2000 small-cap index registered +0.4%. While New York was shut, EasyAlpha re-graded several companies against their industry peers, adjusting its quality assessments as fresh calculations updated our view. Our judgement moved higher on Expeditors International of Washington, Inc. (EXPD) C to A on the sentiment around it, Oracle Corporation (ORCL) D to C on its price behaviour, and Western Digital Corporation (WDC) D to C on its price behaviour.
At the same time, our view shifted lower on Lennox International Inc (LII) A to E, Fortinet Inc (FTNT) A to E on its price behaviour, and Raymond James Financial Inc. (RJF) C to D on its fundamentals. These adjustments reflect changes in our own analytical evaluations rather than announcements or actions from the companies themselves.
In overnight trading among continuous global benchmarks as of 10:20 am New York, commodities diverged, with silver -2.5% alongside gold +0.4%. In currency markets, major pairs were similarly subdued against the dollar, with the euro against the dollar +0.1% and the pound against the dollar +0.1%.
The corporate earnings calendar expands substantially on Thursday, October 29, with 272 covered companies scheduled to report results during the day, part of a wider schedule of 1473 reports arriving over the coming week. Before the opening bell, announcements are scheduled from Eli Lilly and Company (LLY, graded A), Mastercard Inc (MA, graded B). After the closing bell, the focus turns to Amazon.com Inc (AMZN, graded C), Intel Corporation (INTC, graded E).
Individual companies are worth watching today following notable corporate updates and sharp late-trading reactions. For Fortinet Inc (FTNT), the shares fell sharply in late trading, which also weighed on other cybersecurity stocks across the sector. Meanwhile, CH Robinson Worldwide Inc (CHRW) reported third-quarter financial results. In addition, Zurn Elkay Water Solutions Corporation (ZWS) held its third-quarter earnings call.
The session on Wednesday, October 28 also produced sharp individual moves across the S&P 500, where company-specific earnings reports drove significant trading volume that carries into this morning. Among individual movers, F5 Networks Inc (FFIV) -20.4% followed an announcement where management projected fiscal 2027 revenue growth of 8% to 9% alongside margin pressure from security investments, while CoStar Group Inc (CSGP) -14.0% also experienced heavy selling. Conversely, Vertiv Holdings Co (VRT) +16.5% came after the company reported net sales growth of 61% and raised full-year targets on robust data center demand, while Flex Ltd (FLEX) +11.6% rounded out the strongest movers.
When an individual company experiences a severe single-session drop, as occurred during Wednesday's trading, it illustrates how stock market valuation mechanics operate under pressure. A stock price does not simply reflect the revenue or profit a company earned in the prior quarter; it represents the collective market expectation of all future cash flows, discounted into today's dollars. When investors price a business for steady expansion, even a modest downgrade to forward growth expectations forces an immediate recalculation of that valuation multiple. Because that multiple applies to years of anticipated future earnings, shaving even a couple percentage points off projected growth can result in a sudden and severe one-day price adjustment. However, an isolated drop of that magnitude reveals very little about the health of the broader market. Company-specific re-pricings typically reflect internal operational friction, customer purchasing timelines, or specific product refresh cycles within an individual niche. They do not indicate that corporate borrowing channels are freezing, that consumer spending is collapsing across the economy, or that broad financial liquidity is drying up. When systemic conditions remain intact, sharp single-stock pullbacks remain contained events rather than signals of widespread economic weakness. Keeping company-level valuation adjustments distinct from systemic conditions prevents an investor from confusing an individual corporate problem with a general market turn.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
