Heading into Thursday, October 8, the U.S. stock market sits -0.2% from its peak, keeping major indexes close to record territory despite a soft close on Wednesday, October 7. The SPY proxy fund closed at $777.22, with the S&P 500 recording -0.2% on the session. Weakness was more pronounced across other benchmarks: the Dow moved -0.7%, the Nasdaq 100 logged -0.3%, and small caps saw steeper declines as the Russell 2000 recorded -1.3%. Underlying market participation was narrow, with only 23.1% of the top 1,000 U.S. companies managing to finish higher on the day.
While New York was shut, EasyAlpha recalculated its daily company evaluations across the S&P 500. These grade movements reflect shifts in our own assessment rather than corporate press releases or changes in external brokerage ratings. On the downside, our evaluations lowered the standing of three S&P 500 members: Allegion PLC (ALLE) B to E on the sentiment around it, Old Dominion Freight Line Inc (ODFL) A to D on the sentiment around it, and Verisk Analytics Inc (VRSK) B to D on the sentiment around it. In each case, the downgrade in our assessment was driven by deteriorating readings across the sentiment metrics our model evaluates.
Conversely, our scoring improved for three other S&P 500 companies. EasyAlpha raised Corteva Inc (CTVA) D to C on its price behaviour, while also upgrading General Dynamics Corporation (GD) C to B on the sentiment around it and Ametek Inc (AME) C to A on the sentiment around it.
Across the round-the-clock benchmarks that traded while New York was shut, commodities and major currencies weakened against the U.S. dollar. As of 10:35 am New York, moves included silver -3.5% and gold -0.4%, alongside the euro against the dollar -0.7% and the pound against the dollar -0.6%.
Looking ahead to Thursday, October 8, corporate earnings reporting begins to accelerate. A total of 8 covered companies are scheduled to report earnings today, part of a larger cohort of 48 companies reporting over the coming week. Before the opening bell, reports are scheduled from PepsiCo Inc (PEP, graded C), NovaGold Resources Inc (NG, graded E). Following the close of regular trading, scheduled releases include Oil-Dri Corporation Of America (ODC, graded B). Additionally, Nurix Therapeutics Inc (NRIX, graded D) is slated to report during the day without an announced release time.
Key names warrant particular attention heading into the opening bell. The first is Caterpillar Inc (CAT), which faced sharp selling on Wednesday, October 7. The largest downward moves in the S&P 500 during that session came from Caterpillar Inc (CAT) -5.7% and EMCOR Group Inc (EME) -4.8%. Caterpillar fell following the announcement of a federal public inquiry into manufacturing and distribution practices across agricultural equipment markets, a development that pressured heavy machinery shares. The pullback follows a five-year stretch examining how much an investor would have today from investing $100 in Caterpillar stock five years ago.
A second name to watch is General Dynamics Corporation (GD), which enters the session following a leadership announcement. The company announced that Danny Deep will become chief executive officer on January 1, 2027, with Phebe Novakovic transitioning to executive chairman. Another name to watch is WW Grainger Inc (GWW), though our sources show no reported corporate catalyst heading into the session.
On the upside, two strong gainers from Wednesday carry positive momentum into the open. Bucking the wider market decline, the largest upward moves in the S&P 500 came from NRG Energy Inc. (NRG) +4.8% and Moderna Inc (MRNA) +4.8%.
The single most important concept to understand from this morning's data is what market breadth reveals that headline index levels hide. When the S&P 500 registers -0.2% and sits -0.2% from its peak, the market appears steady, creating an impression of general stability. Yet the advancers figure tells a different story: with only 23.1% of the top 1,000 U.S. companies finishing higher, the vast majority of equities declined during the session. Major market indexes are weighted by market capitalization, meaning that a small cluster of the largest companies carries enough mathematical weight to keep the index level virtually unchanged even when the majority of businesses lose value. Tracking the percentage of advancing stocks reveals the true distribution of returns beneath the headline averages, showing whether market strength is broadly shared or concentrated in a handful of heavyweights while the rest of the market loses ground.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
