On Monday, shares of Marathon Petroleum Corp (MPC) fell 5.3% to close at $402.38, with trading volume reaching 1.6x the 20-session average. The sharp drop followed a broader decline in energy markets as Brent crude fell 3.4% to $100.34. Separately, a contractor died in an incident at the company's St. Paul Park refinery on Sunday.

Monday's decline interrupted a powerful rally that has lifted the stock +147.4% so far this year, leaving it 151.4% above its 52-week low of $160.07. That climb prompted Morgan Stanley to raise its price target. However, the fast rise has left the stock trading 6.7% above the average analyst price target of $375.50, even as 52.6% of the 19 analysts covering the company maintain buy ratings.

Against that backdrop, EasyAlpha grades Marathon Petroleum Corp an E, down two steps from C in the latest run against its industry peers in the S&P 500. In historical evaluations across market cycles, companies graded A or B have demonstrated stronger fundamentals and carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than those graded D or E. While the refiner shows notable growth with quarterly revenue growth of +53.7% and a return on equity of 42.1%, its primary vulnerability remains momentum. With the stock trading at a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 14.7 and a forward multiple of 12.9, the sustainability of elevated margins will be tested when the company reports earnings on Tuesday, November 3.

  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
