Strong breadth lifted the Materials sector on Thursday, October 15, with 87.0% of its member companies finishing higher, but underlying quality remains thin. In the exchange-traded fund Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLB), which closed +1.8%, only 34.9% of graded holdings carry an A or B quality grade. The sector posted a cap-weighted move of +1.6%, while an equal-weighted return of +1.9% showed that smaller constituents participated actively. The session's primary momentum came from individual corporate developments rather than broad industry strength: International Paper closed +6.8% and Martin Marietta Materials Inc finished +4.3%, while Nucor Corp trailed the group, closing -1.0%. International Paper sparked the rally after private equity suitors explored separate bids for its European packaging business. The company later confirmed preliminary discussions with potential buyers regarding a possible transaction.
Macro conditions reinforced the advance as 7 of the 11 sectors rose across the wider market. Early equity trading stumbled after government data showed core wholesale inflation jumped 0.7% month over month, topping expectations. But sentiment shifted as Treasury yields dropped sharply later in the session, prompting investors to rotate away from expensive technology shares and into cyclical groups. That rotation bolstered materials and industrial producers across the broader market.
The session's gain offered modest relief, leaving the fund at +0.4% over the past month. Over intermediate windows, however, performance remains subdued, with the fund at -2.5% across the past six months.
EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. In the Materials sector, the low representation of those top tiers means that even broad rallies rest on a foundation of average and below-average businesses. The group remains weighted toward companies that have historically faced higher drawdown risk during market downturns.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
