Breadth across the Materials sector was broad on Tuesday, October 13, with 70.0% of its stocks finishing higher, yet only 31.5% of the exchange-traded fund Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLB) sits in companies graded A or B for quality against their industry peers. Smaller constituents did heavier work, as the sector's equal-weighted return finished +0.6% while the cap-weighted sector ended +0.3%, and the fund closed +0.5% at $49.70. The session was driven by International Flavors & Fragrances Inc, which finished +3.8%, and CF Industries Holdings Inc, which ended +2.3%, while Newmont Goldcorp Corp settled -1.3%. That strength took cue from Europe, where flavor and fragrance peer Givaudan reported 5.2% organic sales growth and double-digit fragrance gains, which boosted fragrance-and-flavor peers.
Materials also proved to be an outlier in a cautious broader market, as 4 of the 11 sectors rose across the session.
Among individual movers, International Flavors & Fragrances Inc drew support from positive fragrance-sector read-through and recent bullish analyst actions. Elsewhere in the sector, Dow launched its VOLTRICELL battery cell materials platform to advance next-generation battery innovation. Nucor announced an investment of $105 million to expand its Towers & Structures facility in Indiana.
Over longer horizons, performance has remained subdued: the fund stands at -1.6% over the past month and sits at -43.7% over the past twelve months.
EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Because just 31.5% of the fund sits in those top two tiers, most of its holdings land in lower tiers. A single session of broad gains does not alter that defensive balance.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
