On Tuesday, October 6, Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLB), an exchange-traded fund tracking the Materials sector, closed +0.5% at $49.74. The sector registered a cap-weighted move of +0.8%, matching +0.8% on an equal-weighted basis as 65.4% of member companies advanced. That performance occurred on a session where 10 of the 11 sectors rose. Leadership came from Corteva Inc, which finished +12.2%, and Dupont De Nemours Inc, which logged +2.0%. Across the sector, 40.5% of the graded weight sits in companies graded A or B.

Our sources show no reported driver for the broader sector's move, though individual companies posted corporate updates. The advance in Corteva Inc followed an analyst upgrade to Overweight with a $19 price target, citing attractive valuation following its spinoff. Buying was further supported by index rebalancing into the S&P MidCap 400. Elsewhere in the sector, paint maker Sherwin-Williams completed an expansion of its Statesville, North Carolina facility, creating its largest manufacturing site in North America. Not all names advanced, with The Mosaic Company ending -1.7%.

EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and historically have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Across Materials, 40.5% of the fund's graded assets sit in those top two grades.

Despite the positive session, the sector has faced headwinds across recent periods. Over the past month, XLB has moved -5.1%, with moves of -3.7% over the past 100 sessions and -3.9% over the past six months. Over the past twelve months, the fund has moved -44.6%. The matching performance between the cap-weighted +0.8% and equal-weighted +0.8% showed that gains on Tuesday were distributed broadly across the sector rather than concentrated solely in mega-cap holdings.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
