The Materials sector moved -0.7% on Wednesday, September 16, weighed down by narrow participation where only 36.0% of member stocks posted gains. The Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund trading under XLB, closed -0.7% at $50.37 as heavy selling in names like Albemarle Corp (-3.5%) outweighed modest gains from Smurfit WestRock plc (+2.0%) and Nucor Corp (+0.7%). Just 31.4% of the fund sits in companies graded A or B against their industry peers. Selling accelerated across the market after the Federal Reserve raised interest rates and indicated additional hikes could follow, lifting Treasury yields and the U.S. dollar while putting direct pressure on metals and basic material producers.

Weakness across broader commodities accompanied the session's decline, as crude oil prices fell following a reported increase in domestic inventories. Sector trading also coincided with company-specific developments, including new additive manufacturing material launches and progress in commercial titanium production. The broader equity market offered little shelter: across the market, 3 of the 11 sectors rose. The sector's equal-weighted performance stood at -0.7%, matching the cap-weighted return and indicating that selling was evenly distributed across the sector's largest and smallest constituents.

The session adds to a difficult run for the fund across multiple measurement periods. Over the past month, XLB has moved -3.6%, while its move across the 100-session window sits at -3.0% leading into Wednesday's session, when equity markets declined following the rate decision. Although the fund has recorded +3.9% over the past six months, its longer-term performance remains negative with a -44.4% move over the past twelve months. The combination of narrow daily breadth and trailing weakness underscores how broad macroeconomic shifts have shaped the sector's trajectory.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
