The Materials sector rose +2.1% on Friday, August 21, driven by broad gains across commodity markets. The Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLB), an exchange-traded fund that tracks the group, gained +2.1% to close at $53.54.
Outside reporting linked the day's strength to metals markets and economic activity data. AP reported that a rise in gold helped lift major mining stocks. Reuters reported that gold reached a three-month high, supported by dollar weakness, debt concerns, and technical buying momentum. Copper prices also strengthened, with Investing.com reporting that supply constraints, lower Chinese refined output, and trade tariff concerns pushed the metal toward record levels. Broader demand provided support as well, as S&P Global reported that the flash U.S. composite purchasing managers index rose to 56.0 in August.
Mining and specialty materials producers led the session. Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc (+7.6%) posted the sector's largest gain, followed by Albemarle Corp (+6.8%). Chemical producers saw mixed results, with Dow Inc (-1.7%) falling as the sector's main laggard.
Participation across the sector was broad, with 23 of 26 advancing. The sector's cap-weighted gain of +2.1% finished slightly ahead of its equal-weighted return of +2.0%, showing that the largest companies contributed marginally more to the day's move than smaller peers. The session extended a positive run for XLB, which has gained +6.5% over the past month.
For investors evaluating XLB, EasyAlpha grades 99.7% of the fund's holdings against their industry peers. Today, 40.0% of that graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. While commodity pricing lifted the sector during the session, more than half of the fund's graded assets remain in lower quality tiers.
