On Friday, September 11, the Materials sector finished +0.5%, driven by large constituents in a portfolio where top-tier quality remains concentrated. The exchange-traded fund Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLB) closed +0.4% at $50.95, with 57.7% of member stocks advancing. The sector's cap-weighted return outpaced the equal-weighted return of +0.1%, propelled by gains in Smurfit WestRock plc (+2.4%) and Sherwin-Williams Co (+1.8%) even as Albemarle Corp (-3.7%) lagged. Across the market, 9 of the 11 sectors rose. The day's modest advance took place as oil prices retreated and inflation readings matched expectations, helping broad market sentiment stabilize.

Company-level news was also active across the sector. Sherwin-Williams gained following new research coverage with price targets between $365 and $400. Meanwhile, packaging maker Crown Holdings announced that it broke ground on an aluminum beverage can manufacturing facility in India to expand its international capacity.

EasyAlpha grades 83.8% of the fund's portfolio by evaluating each company against its industry peers. Within that graded portion, 38.6% sits in companies graded A or B. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

With 38.6% of graded weight in companies graded A or B, most of the fund is allocated to companies graded C, D, or E. That quality balance highlights that the sector's holdings largely land in tiers with fewer fundamental advantages relative to industry peers.

Friday's modest session leaves XLB at -3.1% over the past month, while longer-term performance continues to reflect extended pressure across the group. Over a wider horizon, the fund stands -45.0% over the trailing twelve months, showing that one session of gains from large holdings has not reversed the sector's multi-month trajectory.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
