The Materials sector fell on Thursday, August 27, with the cap-weighted group declining -0.7%. The Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund tracking the group under the ticker XLB, dropped -0.8% to close at $53.23. The pullback reflected a broad market rotation out of cyclical industries. Reuters reported that technology was the only advancing sector in the S&P 500 on Thursday as Nvidia lifted tech shares, leaving the other ten market sectors in negative territory.
The broader market showed a similar divergence across industry groups. MarketScreener reported that Treasury yields climbed following stronger-than-expected July inflation data. AP News reported that major indexes climbed on tech strength even as most individual S&P 500 stocks lost ground on the day, reflecting a session where market leadership remained tightly clustered in tech while other groups lagged.
Inside the sector, selling was broad and consistent across market caps. Only 6 of 26 constituents moved higher during the session. The sector's cap-weighted return of -0.7% matched its equal-weighted return of -0.7%, showing that selling pressure was distributed evenly across both large heavyweights and smaller constituents. Sector laggard International Paper (-3.6%) posted the steepest decline. Advancers were sparse and gains remained muted, led by Albemarle Corp (+0.9%) and LyondellBasell Industries NV (+0.7%).
With $8.3 billion in net assets spread across just 26 holdings, XLB provides concentrated exposure to the sector's largest names. That relatively compact basket means that broad-based selling across member stocks translates directly into the fund's overall daily return, even as XLB maintains a positive return of +2.9% over the past month.

Every company in it, graded, with where the quality actually sits.
How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
