Materials Weakens as Thin Breadth and Rate Pressure Weigh

With only a tenth of stocks advancing, climbing Treasury yields and a light mix of top quality companies left materials under broad pressure on Wednesday.

EasyAlpha grades every company in the Materials sector against its industry peers. In the Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under the ticker XLB, only 40.5% of the fund's weight sits in companies graded A or B. That low concentration of top-tier businesses left the group vulnerable on Wednesday, September 30, when internal breadth narrowed to 11.5% of members advancing. The fund closed -0.8% as The Mosaic Company weighed on the group while rising Treasury yields pressured equities across the broader market.

The cap-weighted sector closed -0.8%, while the equal-weighted sector finished -0.9%, showing that selling pressure extended evenly across large and mid-sized producers alike. Across the wider market, 3 of the 11 sectors rose. The sector's sharpest decline came from The Mosaic Company, which finished -3.4%. The stock has remained under pressure as lingering second-quarter losses, elevated ammonia and sulfur input costs, and production curtailments continue to weigh on investor sentiment across agricultural chemicals.

Advancing stocks were rare throughout the session. Vulcan Materials Company topped the gainers, finishing +0.8%, while industrial gas supplier Linde plc Ordinary Shares ended +0.3%. Positive operational updates within the sector did little to alter the overall tone. Architectural paint maker Sherwin-Williams celebrated the grand opening of its expanded manufacturing facility in Statesville, North Carolina, but the company milestone could not counter the macro drag of higher bond yields.

Wednesday's decline adds to an extended slump for the $8.8 billion fund, which provides access at an expense ratio of 0.08% but reflects persistent weakness across basic materials. Over recent windows, XLB has returned -7.6% over the past month, -3.5% over the past six months, and -45.7% over the past twelve months. With lower-graded names occupying most of the portfolio, the sector has struggled to mount sustained rallies when broader market conditions tighten.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
