The Consumer Staples sector moved -0.2% on Thursday, October 1, with only 35.3% of its member companies gaining ground. The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund holding $14.5 billion in assets under ticker XLP, closed -0.3% at $80.34. EasyAlpha grades 46.0% of the fund's graded portfolio in the A or B quality tiers, identifying companies that historically carry lower drawdown risk than peers graded D or E. The cap-weighted sector fared slightly better than the equal-weighted return of -0.5%, but the group was weighed down by McCormick & Company Incorporated, which finished -4.8% on the day. Investors responded negatively after the spice maker's quarterly report showed a 2.5% decline in Americas consumer volume.

Earnings Details and Volume Headwinds

McCormick's quarterly performance illustrated broader demand challenges across packaged foods. In its official financial release, the company reaffirmed its full-year outlook despite sluggish volume trends. Management noted that higher freight, commodity, and commercial-investment costs are expected to compress profit margins in the fourth quarter.

Sector Breadth and Longer-Term Trend

Across the broader market, 5 of the 11 sectors rose. Inside consumer staples, gains were narrow and confined to select retail and beverage names. Convenience store operator Caseys General Stores Inc closed +1.8%, and brewer Molson Coors Brewing Co Class B ended +1.8%. Elsewhere across the retail landscape, Walmart issued a recall of nearly 4.5 million grill wire brushes due to an ingestion hazard. Those advances were not enough to offset broader softness across packaged foods and consumer products.

The session extended a challenging stretch for the sector. Over intermediate horizons, XLP sits at -5.8% over the past month and shows -3.6% across the past 100 sessions. Over longer periods, the fund stands at -1.9% across six months and +2.7% over the past twelve months.

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
