  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades Medtronic PLC B, indicating good quality that scores better than most healthcare peers, anchored by valuation while price trend is the main watch item.
  • The day: The shares rallied 3.8% to close at $91.82 after an oversubscribed exchange offer to divest its MiniMed diabetes business.
  • Watching: Scheduled quarterly financial results on Tuesday, November 17.

Medtronic shares jumped on Monday, October 12, registering the stock's eighth-largest daily gain over the past year as trading volume reached 1.4x the 20-session average. The rally pushed the stock to its third consecutive higher finish, supported by a heavy slate of corporate and regulatory news.

The central catalyst was the resolution of a major portfolio separation. Medtronic announced that its exchange offer to split off MiniMed Group was oversubscribed upon expiration. Under the preliminary terms, the medical device maker will exchange all 252.8 million shares of MiniMed common stock in its possession, accepting roughly 55 million tendered Medtronic ordinary shares on a pro rata basis. Retiring those tendered shares shrinks Medtronic's share count while fully separating its remaining interest in the diabetes division.

The offer drew heavy demand, with more than 298 million ordinary shares tendered prior to expiration. Due to the oversubscription, Medtronic announced a preliminary proration factor of approximately 18.3% of tendered shares to be accepted in the exchange. The company stated that the final proration calculation will be confirmed on October 14 after the guaranteed delivery period concludes.

EasyAlpha grades Medtronic B relative to its industry peers in the S&P 500. In EasyAlpha's framework, a B grade denotes good quality, pointing to a company that scores better than most peers in its industry. Historically, companies graded A or B have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. In its latest reported results, the business posted quarterly revenue growth of +13.7% and a profit margin of 13.9%.

Valuation is where the company looks strongest. Priced at 14.9 times forward earnings with a dividend yield of 3.2%, Medtronic trades at an accessible multiple compared with broader medical technology peers. Wall Street analysts share that favorable view: among analysts covering the stock, 67.9% issue buy ratings, with an average price target of $104.44.

The primary watch item in Medtronic's file is price trend. Even though the stock sits +4.4% over the past week, the shares remain -4.4% so far this year. The price sits 27.4% above the 52-week low, but remains 10.8% below the 52-week high. While the MiniMed exchange offer reduces share count and streamlines operations, maintaining this momentum will require the newly focused device business to deliver consistent revenue growth in its core cardiovascular and surgical segments.

  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
