The Energy sector finished slightly higher on Monday, September 28, driven by its largest integrated producers while the broader group lagged. The sector recorded a cap-weighted move of +0.2%, but the equal-weighted sector moved -0.6% as only 23.8% of its members advanced. The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund trading under ticker XLE, closed +0.1% at $62.12, supported by Exxon Mobil Corp moving +1.2% and Chevron Corp moving +0.9%. The move followed higher crude oil prices after renewed geopolitical friction in the Strait of Hormuz.
Company-level developments also centered on the group's largest member. Exxon Mobil Corp announced that it reached one billion barrels of cumulative oil production from the offshore Stabroek block in Guyana, crossing the milestone in under seven years of operation. In contrast, other sector components faced selling pressure, with EQT Corporation finishing -1.9%.
The sector showed relative strength on a day when broader equity markets retreated and only 3 of the 11 sectors rose. Over longer windows, XLE stands at +9.0% over the past 100 sessions and +0.3% over six months, compared to -0.3% over the past month and -32.5% over the trailing twelve months.
EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Currently, 16.3% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Because the majority of the sector sits in lower quality tiers, fund returns remain heavily reliant on the stability and momentum of its two largest components.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
