The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector under ticker XLK, holds a sturdy core: EasyAlpha grades the stocks in the sector against industry peers, and 61.4% of the portfolio sits in companies graded A or B. Breadth inside the sector was narrow on Thursday, October 8, with only 28.4% of its S&P 500 members advancing, even as 6 of the 11 sectors rose across the wider market. The largest holdings drove the difference: the cap-weighted Information Technology sector finished -1.8%, compared to -1.1% on an equal-weighted basis, while XLK closed -1.8% at $197.79. The selling accelerated after reports showed OpenAI revenue was lower than expected, raising immediate questions about the near-term payoff from corporate spending on artificial intelligence.

Across wider markets, higher oil prices, elevated bond yields, and artificial intelligence debt needs pressured global shares and chipmakers. In the United States, technology losses and Treasury yield volatility kept Wall Street unsettled.

The drag across hardware and optical suppliers was visible in Coherent Inc, which ended the session at -9.6%, though our sources show no company-specific reported driver for the move. In consumer hardware, Apple confirmed that select iPhone 18 Pro Max units on AT&T lost cellular service and required physical replacement, adding mild friction to the sector's heaviest anchor. At the same time, Broadcom highlighted new artificial intelligence networking switches and optical components ahead of the Open Compute Project summit, even as broader chip sentiment faltered. In contrast to hardware weakness, enterprise software and consulting names provided a counterbalance: Godaddy Inc posted +6.2% and Accenture plc recorded +6.0%.

The cap-weighted design of XLK leaves it vulnerable when top holdings stumble together. Over the past month, the fund stands at +5.3%, reflecting recent momentum that met a sharp pause on Thursday, October 8. Historically, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and carry a lower risk of large drawdowns than those graded D or E.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
