On Tuesday, September 8, the Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLY), an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector, closed -0.8%. Beneath the headline numbers, breadth was unusually narrow. Only 17.4% of the sector's stocks finished higher, and the cap-weighted sector move of -0.3% stayed well ahead of the equal-weighted return of -1.8%. Heavyweight gains from Tesla Inc (+4.0%) helped offset sharp drops elsewhere, even as broader stock indexes fell on renewed inflation and interest-rate concerns.

Travel and leisure shares absorbed the steepest losses on the day. The sector's sharpest decline came from Expedia Group Inc. (-7.9%), which dropped as selling swept through travel booking platforms ahead of an upcoming investor presentation. Across the broader market, only 2 of the 11 sectors rose, underscoring the defensive tone across trading desks.

Individual retailers attempted to counter macro headwinds with strategic updates. Target announced new artificial intelligence search tools for digital shoppers and confirmed plans to open eight stores this autumn. Elsewhere, Tractor Supply moved to improve fulfillment by partnering with Instacart for same-day delivery across its pet-care locations. Even so, discount and apparel chains struggled, with TJX Companies touching a 52-week low.

For investors tracking the sector through XLY, the day's retreat extends a softer run. The fund has moved -4.9% over the past month and -3.1% across the chart window, closing at $114.02. At an expense ratio of 0.08%, the $22.7 billion fund offers low-cost sector access, but its market-cap weighting leaves performance heavily dependent on a few large holdings. Strength from names like Tesla Inc (+4.0%) and Lululemon Athletica Inc. (+2.6%) provided support on Tuesday, September 8, yet the divergence between cap-weighted and equal-weighted performance highlights how fragile sector-level gains become when participation dries up.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
