The Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) is an exchange-traded fund tracking the Information Technology sector, where 51.8% of the graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. On Wednesday, October 7, internal breadth was narrow, with only 36.6% of the sector's stocks advancing. Cap-weighted performance for the sector ended the session at -0.1%, while an equal-weighted version of those same names finished at -0.8%. That gap shows that the sector's largest components carried the group and kept losses modest, while the average stock saw more selling pressure. Resilient mega-caps drew support from artificial intelligence hardware announcements. Hewlett Packard Enterprise reached a 52-week high after introducing servers tailored for enterprise artificial intelligence. HP showcased desktop workstations configured for local artificial intelligence computing. Microsoft debuted Surface laptops built around specialized processors.

Semiconductor and hardware names provided the primary upside. Micron Technology Inc was the top performer in the sector, closing +4.1%. Union workers at a Taiwan manufacturing facility voted to authorize a strike. The shares found support as analysts highlighted tight memory supply driven by artificial intelligence demand. Additional support in semiconductor equipment came from Applied Materials and Intel, which announced a joint effort on chipmaking innovations to accelerate production of advanced processors and packaging. Meanwhile, cybersecurity vendor Crowdstrike Holdings Inc lagged the sector, finishing at -4.8%.

Across the wider market, defensive trading prevailed as 3 of the 11 sectors rose. The fund closed at $201.37, putting its daily return at -0.3%. Over the past month, the fund stands at +7.2%.

EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Historically, companies graded A or B demonstrate stronger fundamentals and carry a lower risk of severe drawdowns compared to peers graded D or E. In this sector, the heavy weighting of high-quality leaders cushions performance during quiet market sessions, but the divergence between cap-weighted and equal-weighted returns shows that strength is uneven across the broader industry.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
