The Communication Services sector recorded +0.4% on Tuesday, September 29, but the headline advance masked widespread weakness beneath the surface. The equal-weighted version of the group finished at -0.7%, with only 21.1% of member companies moving higher. The exchange-traded fund Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLC) closed +0.2% at $111.44, propelled by its largest constituent, Meta Platforms Inc., which ended +3.2%. Across the broader market, stocks faced headwinds as the 10-year Treasury yield climbed to 5.25%, leaving the sector as one of the few gainers on a day when 3 of the 11 sectors rose.
Company-specific developments highlighted the divergence across the group. Meta Platforms Inc. gained momentum after launching its Muse for Small Business tool, expanding artificial intelligence workflows for commercial accounts. Reddit, Inc. also supported the sector, closing +1.6%. In contrast, media and legacy entertainment holdings struggled. Paramount Skydance Corporation Class B Common Stock finished -2.8% after the company announced a $44.4 billion debt offering to fund its planned acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery.
The divergence between large platform companies and smaller constituents reflects a longer-term pattern for the sector. Over the past month, XLC stands at -1.4%, while its six-month return is +0.5%. The heavy concentration in a handful of massive digital platforms means the cap-weighted fund can show resilience even during sessions when most individual member stocks lose ground.
Quality metrics across the sector show notable concentration at the top. EasyAlpha evaluates 87.0% of the fund's total assets, and 22.8% of that graded weight sits in companies with A or B grades. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Because most of the fund's graded weight sits in lower grades, overall sector performance remains tightly bound to its highest-quality leaders.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
