On Tuesday, October 13, the Communication Services sector showed positive session breadth driven by its largest constituents, even as its fundamental quality mix remains lean. Inside Communication Services Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLC), an exchange-traded fund that tracks the sector, only 23.8% of graded holdings carry an A or B quality grade, with EasyAlpha evaluating 85.7% of the portfolio. Breadth was broad across the group, with 73.7% of sector members finishing higher on a day when 4 of the 11 sectors rose. However, capitalization weight drove the overall return: the cap-weighted sector posted +0.8%, outpacing an equal-weighted return of +0.4% across the same names. That move was anchored by Meta Platforms Inc., which finished +2.6% after introducing frontier artificial intelligence models built for automated agents. The release is intended to compete directly with leading industry labs.
The day's top gainer was Charter Communications Inc, which ended +4.4%. The advance reflected a relief bounce from oversold levels as investors absorbed an executive transition. That rebound occurred despite broader competitive pressure across traditional telecom and cable providers, after analysts lowered price targets across major carriers because of emerging competition from satellite broadband services.
Conversely, Take-Two Interactive Software Inc closed -4.1% as the sector's primary laggard. The decline was stock-specific: analysts reduced quarterly bookings and earnings estimates on softer expectations for its core basketball title and continued mobile weakness. While broader video game peers remained steady, the reduced outlook pressured the publisher throughout the session.
For investors tracking the group through the fund, XLC closed at $112.26, delivering +0.7% on the session. While the vehicle offers low-cost exposure at an expense ratio of 0.08% across $22.5 billion in net assets, Tuesday's move did little to change the fund's trajectory over wider horizons, with the shares posting -2.4% over the past month and -1.4% over the past twelve months.
That contrast between daily performance and longer-term weakness reflects the group's quality makeup. EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B feature stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. Because less than a quarter of the fund's graded portfolio reaches those top tiers, the sector relies heavily on a handful of mega-cap leaders to generate momentum, leaving the broader group sensitive to individual corporate setbacks.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
