  • Our read: Meta is graded D by EasyAlpha while 88.7% of 62 analyst ratings are buys, pairing high profitability with elevated volatility among communication services peers.
  • The day: Shares jumped 11.3% to close at $741.25 as early download data for its Muse assistant and an analyst target increase spurred heavy buying.
  • Watching: The upcoming Meta Connect developer conference, followed by quarterly earnings on Wednesday, November 4.

On Monday, September 21, Meta Platforms Inc. recorded its largest single-day gain of the past year, jumping 11.3% on volume reaching 2.6x its 20-session average. The advance pushed the stock back toward its 52-week peak.

The rally followed encouraging adoption figures for Meta's personal artificial intelligence application, Muse. Mobile intelligence estimates showed the tool topped rival personal artificial intelligence apps in post-launch downloads. In North American mobile markets, Muse's initial iOS downloads outpaced ChatGPT's early mobile launch. Adding to the momentum, Wells Fargo lifted its price target to $796 ahead of the annual Meta Connect developer showcase, citing product momentum from recent model releases.

From an operating standpoint, Meta carried solid financial returns into Monday's session, posting a profit margin of 29.8% and return on equity of 29.8%. Even so, EasyAlpha graded the company D against its industry peers heading into the open. In our historical research, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and have historically carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

That below-average grade contrasts with Wall Street sentiment, where 88.7% of 62 analysts rate the stock a buy, with an average price target of $755.28. While early enthusiasm for consumer agents drove Monday's surge, our historical tier analysis shows that lower-graded companies have faced greater drawdown risk over time.

  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
