On Friday, October 9, the exchange-traded fund Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLB) closed +0.3%. The broader Materials sector recorded +0.6%, but that positive result concealed negative breadth across the group. Only 42.3% of the sector's S&P 500 members rose during the session. While the cap-weighted sector moved higher, the equal-weighted sector finished -0.3%, showing that smaller components lagged while a handful of large holdings carried the fund. EasyAlpha grades the stocks in the sector against their industry peers, and 42.3% of the fund sits in companies graded A or B. Today's advance came down to large mining names: Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc closed +3.6% and Newmont Goldcorp Corp ended +2.0%. Those gains offset The Mosaic Company, which closed -5.0%. That divergence followed physical commodity markets, where copper prices rose 2.2% and gold advanced as Treasury yields and the dollar softened, while fertilizer stocks retreated on proposals for cheaper Belarusian potash imports.

Beyond trade proposals, The Mosaic Company has faced headwinds from production curtailments and higher costs. Elsewhere in the sector, capital spending continued in manufacturing. Nucor announced a $105 million expansion of its utility structures facility, and PPG announced a $70 million investment to expand its aerospace site.

On a day when 9 of the 11 sectors rose, Materials finished higher alongside most of the market. Yet sustaining momentum has proved difficult for the sector over longer horizons. XLB has moved -2.6% over the past month. The split between cap-weighted and equal-weighted returns highlights how dependent the group remains on its largest components.

The concentration in top holdings works both ways for XLB. When fewer than half of member stocks advance, the sector relies heavily on external commodity moves in copper and gold to maintain positive performance. If those physical markets falter, the lack of broad support across chemical and agricultural names leaves the fund without a second line of defense.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
