The Materials sector recorded +0.8% on a cap-weighted basis on Friday, October 2, with 56.0% of its member stocks advancing. The session's upward movement was concentrated among large-cap producers: weighting every component equally yielded a smaller move of +0.2%. The Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund, an exchange-traded fund trading under the ticker XLB, closed +0.7% at $48.88. That modest daily progress came across a portfolio where only 39.5% of holdings receive an A or B quality grade when measured against industry peers. Across the broader market, equities gained after softer payroll data pushed the dollar lower.
Copper and basic metals led the sector's advance, supported by depleted warehouse inventories and supply constraints in South America. Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc closed +4.0% after issuing a third-quarter operational update that confirmed copper sales and output held near targets and its Indonesian smelter resumed operations. Our sources show no reported company-specific catalyst for Steel Dynamics Inc, which finished +2.6%. In related industry developments, Evolution Metals targeted a tenfold capacity expansion in the magnet market.
Offsetting those gains was a substantial pullback in agricultural chemicals. Corteva Inc closed -5.2%, marking the steepest retreat among the sector's holdings. The decline reflected a structural adjustment rather than operating distress, as the company completed the distribution of shares for its separated seed business, Vylor, repricing the remaining entity.
Across the wider market, 11 of the 11 sectors rose, giving materials modest momentum within a broad-based rally. Over longer periods, however, the sector continues to face substantial pressure. XLB is -7.7% over the past month, -6.3% over the past 100 sessions, and -45.5% over the past twelve months. With an expense ratio of 0.08% across $8.8 billion in net assets, Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund offers inexpensive group exposure, though low fees have not insulated holders from the cyclical downturn across basic materials.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
