Breadth across the Materials sector proved resilient on Wednesday, October 14, even as weakness among its largest holdings pulled the headline index lower. Across the group, 65.2% of member stocks gained, leaving the equal-weighted reading at +0.1%. By contrast, the cap-weighted sector finished -0.5%, while the exchange-traded fund Materials Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLB) closed -0.1% at $49.66. That divergence stemmed from the top of the roster: Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc recorded -3.9%, offsetting an advance from chemical maker Dow Inc at +2.4%. Under the surface, 41.0% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. That split performance played out as a hotter-than-expected inflation report lifted Treasury yields, pressuring equities broadly across a market where only 3 of the 11 sectors rose.
The divide between chemical producers and industrial metals shaped trading across the sector. Dow Inc found support after unveiling its battery cell materials platform, designed to advance next-generation battery innovation. Other chemical makers followed higher, with LyondellBasell Industries NV recording +1.9% during the session. In contrast, for Freeport-McMoran Copper & Gold Inc, our sources show no reported driver for the session's decline.
That heavy concentration in cyclical commodities has defined the sector's trajectory over longer horizons. Over the past month, the fund stands at -2.1%, alongside -4.0% over the past six months, -1.3% across the past 100 sessions, and -44.3% over the past twelve months, reflecting sustained headwinds for cyclical producers. Because large miners and commodity chemical firms dominate the cap-weighted structure, shifts in macro sentiment often overshadow broad-based gains among smaller member firms.
As an investment vehicle, the fund provides targeted exposure to these heavy industrial and materials companies, managing $7.8 billion in net assets. When macro crosscurrents hit interest rates and raw material demand, the fund's top-heavy allocation means that headline performance can decouple from what the majority of its individual holdings experience.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
