The shares surged on Tuesday, October 20 to deliver the stock's fourth-largest daily gain of the past year. Trading volume reached 2.6x the 20-session average. For the third quarter, 3M delivered adjusted earnings of $2.50 per share, beating analyst estimates of $2.38 per share, while adjusted revenue of $6.6 billion reflected organic sales growth of 3.3%.

Alongside the quarterly beat, 3M raised its full-year profit outlook for the second consecutive quarter, lifting adjusted earnings guidance to between $9.10 and $9.15 per share. The broader catalyst, however, came from artificial intelligence infrastructure. 3M entered an expanded commercial agreement that granted Amazon a warrant to purchase up to 3.2 million shares of common stock at $164.89 per share, with vesting tied to Amazon purchasing up to $6 billion in optical connectivity and data center hardware over seven years. In an earnings call, management emphasized that demand from data center and semiconductor customers helped offset weakness in automotive and consumer markets.

EasyAlpha graded 3M Company B entering Tuesday's session, indicating good quality that scores better than most industry peers. Historically, companies in the A and B tiers have demonstrated stronger fundamentals and carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than those graded D or E. That relative finding reflects broad historical patterns rather than a forecast for any single stock, and a B grade does not prevent sudden declines. Quarterly revenue growth registered +2.5% year over year, and growth is what looks strongest.

Yet the broader business still carries friction. The primary area to monitor is the dividend, pointing to ongoing capital constraints as management balances turnaround investments with shareholder distributions. Even with data center growth, legacy segments faced headwinds, as organic sales in China declined 10.7% during the quarter alongside persistent cash outflows for PFAS environmental litigation. The stock currently carries a dividend yield of 1.8%, but maintaining that payout while funding manufacturing expansion for optical technologies will require continued margin discipline.

Tuesday's sharp advance leaves the stock trading at 17.8 times forward earnings, compared to an average Wall Street price target of $186.15. That target implies 8.5% of room above Tuesday's close. The Amazon deal gives the company a tangible foothold in artificial intelligence infrastructure, but the stock will ultimately need sustained execution across its traditional industrial lines to justify further multiple expansion.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
