EasyAlpha grades 52.1% of the Health Care sector in its top A and B quality tiers, and the group demonstrated wide strength on Friday, October 9 with 89.8% of its S&P 500 members advancing. The cap-weighted sector move of +1.5% matched the equal-weighted return of +1.5%, indicating that smaller firms kept pace with the largest companies. In the Health Care Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLV), an exchange-traded fund tracking the sector, the session was driven by sharp rallies in Moderna Inc, which ended +14.2%, and Humana Inc, which posted +11.3% on the day. That advance followed federal plans for a planned national push to accelerate cancer vaccine development, which propelled biotechnology.

Humana jumped after reporting that 95% of its Medicare Advantage enrollment would sit in plans with four stars or higher for 2027. The annual ratings carry substantial financial weight because they affect federal quality-bonus payments in 2028.

The same regulatory release produced the sector's steepest decline. CVS Health Corp served as the primary counterweight, closing -1.9%. The drop came after analysis pointed to future earnings pressure from weaker 2027 Medicare star ratings. That divergence between Humana and CVS underscored how regulatory scorecards can separate individual insurers, even on a day when healthcare stocks enjoyed near-universal tailwinds.

On Friday, October 9, 9 of the 11 sectors rose, and XLV closed +1.6% at $170.82. The session built on an established longer-term upward trend for the fund, which has posted +16.0% over the past 100 sessions and +18.5% over the past twelve months, showing that Friday's advance was part of a sustained multi-month climb rather than an isolated move. The fund holds $43.9 billion in net assets and carries an expense ratio of 0.08% across its portfolio of healthcare holdings.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
