  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades Moderna Inc E, placing it in the weakest quality tier among Healthcare peers in the S&P 500.
  • The day: The stock posted a solid gain of +9.9% to close at $154.27 as pipeline momentum continued following positive late-stage oncology trial results.
  • Watching: The gap between the market price and Wall Street targets, with shares closing 30.9% above the average analyst price target of $106.62.

Moderna Inc shares recorded a solid move on Tuesday, September 1, rising +9.9% to finish at $154.27. The primary catalyst was sustained follow-through buying extending from late-August clinical trial momentum, when Moderna and its development partner announced that their investigational mRNA cancer vaccine met its primary recurrence-free survival endpoints in a Phase 3 melanoma study.

Corporate financing activity also accompanied the session, as the company completed an upsized private offering of convertible senior notes that raised $3.0 billion. Additionally, a rival drugmaker announced that it advanced a competing mRNA flu vaccine candidate into Phase 3 trials.

Despite the market enthusiasm, EasyAlpha grades the company E among Healthcare peers in the S&P 500. In historical testing across industries, companies graded A or B have shown stronger fundamentals and carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than those graded D or E. Quarterly revenue grew +2.1% year over year, reflecting modest commercial expansion.

The stock is up +179.8% over the past month and +423.1% so far this year. Yet Wall Street remains skeptical, with only 17.4% of 23 covering analysts maintaining a buy rating. The shares now trade well above consensus price targets, creating a wide gap between recent market enthusiasm and fundamental expectations.

  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
