  • Our read: Moderna Inc sits in the weakest quality tier with an E grade against large-cap Healthcare peers, where price trend contrasts with persistent vulnerabilities in efficiency.
  • The day: The shares fell 7.8% to $187.46 as health officials eased outbreak concerns and investors locked in gains ahead of clinical trial data.
  • Watching: The next quarterly earnings report scheduled for Thursday, November 5.

Shares of Moderna Inc fell 7.8% to close at $187.46 on Tuesday, with trading volume reaching 1.3x the 20-session average. The decline reversed Monday's advance after a World Health Organization official stated that the risk of a plague epidemic was low, deflating a brief rise across vaccine developers following an isolated death at a research institute in Siberia.

The pullback also reflected profit-taking following an extended rally. The stock had advanced on news of its upcoming addition to the Nasdaq-100 and continued optimism for its Phase 3 melanoma program partnered with Merck. With the full clinical trial readout scheduled for presentation at a medical conference later this month, some market participants chose to reduce exposure ahead of the event.

Tuesday's decline interrupted a substantial multi-month advance. Even with the pullback, the shares are +28.8% over the past month and +535.7% so far this year.

Moderna Inc carried an E grade from EasyAlpha into Tuesday's session against its industry peers among Healthcare companies in the S&P 500. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E. While price trend is its primary strength, efficiency remains the key area to watch.

Wall Street analysts have maintained a skeptical stance during the advance. Of the 23 analysts covering the company, only 21.7% issue a buy rating. The consensus price target of $120.67 sits 35.6% below Tuesday's close.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
