  • Our read: EasyAlpha grades Moderna Inc E, reflecting peer-relative quality in the weakest tier against industry peers as solid debt load is offset by lagging efficiency.
  • The day: The stock rose 4.8% to close at $196.48 after an expanded cancer therapy partnership and an upcoming index addition spurred buying.
  • Watching: The company is scheduled to report its next quarterly financial results on Thursday, November 5.

Moderna shares rose 4.8% on Wednesday following an expanded multi-year collaboration between Moderna, Merck, and Tempus to support the potential commercialization of individualized cancer therapy intismeran autogene.

Trading was further supported by an index rebalancing announcement confirming Moderna will join the Nasdaq-100 before the market opens on October 9. The news helped the stock shake off pressure seen earlier in the week, when health authorities noted that suspected plague risks in Russia were low, deflating short-term speculative interest across vaccine developers.

Wednesday's quiet gain fits into a prolonged upward move for the stock. Over the past month, shares are +40.0%, and the stock stands +566.3% so far this year. The latest close leaves Moderna sitting 7.4% below its 52-week peak.

Yet despite that share price momentum, EasyAlpha grades Moderna E, placing it in the lowest tier among industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals, and historically they have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

The grade reflects underlying operational challenges. Moderna brought manageable debt load into Wednesday's session. That strength is counterbalanced by efficiency, where financial results continue to trail the peer group. Quarterly revenue growth was +2.1% year over year, while the forward price-to-earnings ratio sits at 23.0.

Wall Street analysts show similar hesitation. Among the 23 analysts covering the company, only 21.7% rate the stock as a buy. The average price target of $120.67 sits 38.6% below Wednesday's close.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
