The session at a glance

As trading begins on Thursday, September 10, the broader U.S. stock market sits -2.0% from its all-time peak. In the previous session on Wednesday, September 9, major indexes settled lower across the board. The S&P 500 closed -0.5%, with the SPY exchange-traded fund finishing at $762.40. The Nasdaq 100 closed -0.3%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished -0.8%. Smaller companies saw steeper declines, with small caps closing -1.4%. Underneath the surface, participation was unusually thin: only 22.2% of stocks finished higher, showing that weakness was far broader than the modest move in the headline index suggested.

While New York was shut, EasyAlpha completed a fresh scoring run that changed its assessment on several companies. On the positive side, EasyAlpha upgraded three companies based on measurable shifts in their underlying data. Our evaluation moved Datadog Inc (DDOG) E to C on its price behaviour. EasyAlpha also upgraded CDW Corp (CDW) D to C on its price behaviour. In addition, our read shifted Expeditors International of Washington, Inc. (EXPD) C to A on the sentiment around it.

At the same time, EasyAlpha lowered its grades on three other companies where risk metrics deteriorated. Our view moved Healthpeak Properties Inc (DOC) A to C on the sentiment around it. EasyAlpha also downgraded Vertiv Holdings Co (VRT) A to C on its price behaviour. In addition, our assessment shifted Realty Income Corporation (O) C to E on the sentiment around it. In each case, these rating changes reflect adjustments in our own models rather than sudden corporate announcements.

In round-the-clock trading before the New York opening bell, benchmark commodities and major currencies experienced modest moves. As of 11:50 am New York, overnight trading showed silver -1.0% and gold -0.8%. In foreign exchange markets over the same period, trading recorded the pound against the dollar -0.1% and the euro against the dollar 0.0%.

Looking ahead to the trading day on Thursday, September 10, corporate earnings and recent price disruptions will shape the open. A total of 16 covered companies report results during today's session, part of a busy calendar featuring 26 reporting companies over the next seven days. After the close today, several major technology and industrial firms report quarterly results: Oracle Corporation (ORCL, graded B), Adobe Systems Incorporated (ADBE, graded E), Copart Inc (CPRT, graded D), Descartes Systems Group Inc (DSGX, graded D). Each company enters its announcement with an established grade reflecting its historical peer-relative profile.

Several individual stocks demand close attention this morning based on recent company developments and shifting market action. EasyAlpha has The Cooper Companies, Inc (COO) on watch as the shares face pressure following an analyst downgrade to Neutral with a reduced $61 price target. Also on the watch list is Core & Main Inc (CNM), which slipped after releasing second-quarter results that beat adjusted earnings estimates while management reaffirmed its full-year guidance amid slower organic growth and end-market weakness.

The third name to watch is Vertiv Holdings Co (VRT), which experienced heavy selling in the prior session. Among major index components, Vertiv Holdings Co (VRT) -9.6% led declines during Wednesday, September 9's session without a fresh company announcement, though the pullback comes as investors continue evaluating the company's recent agreement to acquire UtilityInnovation Group for $1.45 billion upfront. Heavy selling also hit Caseys General Stores Inc (CASY) -14.2% after reporting first-quarter same-store sales growth of 3.2%, which trailed market expectations and overshadowed an adjusted earnings beat. Offsetting some of the broader market weakness, notable gainers heading into the open included Datadog Inc (DDOG) +7.2% and Meta Platforms Inc. (META) +6.6%.

The single most important concept from these numbers is what market breadth reveals that a headline index cannot. Major benchmarks like the S&P 500 are market-cap weighted, meaning the largest corporations exert enormous influence over the index's official percentage move. When mega-cap technology shares like Meta Platforms post strong gains, they can mask widespread selling across hundreds of smaller constituents. On Wednesday, September 9, the S&P 500 closed -0.5%, which appears to be a modest decline, yet only 22.2% of stocks managed to rise. Tracking the percentage of advancing stocks provides an essential check on market health: a calm surface on the main index often conceals significant divergence underneath.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
