The session at a glance

Heading into the opening bell on Thursday, October 1, the broad U.S. stock market sits -2.0% from its recent peak. Following the completed session on Wednesday, September 30, the S&P 500 closed -0.2% with the SPY fund finishing at $762.63. Major benchmarks showed mixed performance across segments, as the tech-focused Nasdaq 100 closed +0.2%, the Dow closed -0.8%, and the Russell 2000 small-cap index ended -0.4%. Market breadth remained restrained during the prior session, with only 27.2% of major equities finishing higher.

While New York was shut, EasyAlpha re-graded members of the S&P 500 based on updated model evaluations. Our newest evaluation upgraded First Solar Inc (FSLR) E to D on its price behaviour, Builders FirstSource Inc (BLDR) E to D on the sentiment around it, and Huntington Ingalls Industries Inc (HII) D to B on the sentiment around it. These changes reflect improvements in our underlying measurements, with price behaviour lifting our assessment for First Solar, and sentiment metrics driving our revised perspective for Builders FirstSource and Huntington Ingalls Industries.

At the same time, our scoring run downgraded Jabil Circuit Inc (JBL) C to E on its price behaviour, International Flavors & Fragrances Inc (IFF) C to D on the sentiment around it, and Vertiv Holdings Co (VRT) C to E on the sentiment around it. These downward grade adjustments stem entirely from our internal evaluation factors. Weakening price behaviour led directly to our lower grade for Jabil Circuit, while declining sentiment indicators drove our reduced assessments for International Flavors & Fragrances and Vertiv Holdings.

In round-the-clock trading while New York equity exchanges remained closed, overnight benchmarks as of 12:40 pm New York showed gold and silver advancing while the euro and the yen retreated against the dollar.

Looking ahead to the corporate calendar for Thursday, October 1, 6 covered companies are scheduled to report quarterly results today, part of a slate of 27 firms reporting over the coming week. Before the opening bell, earnings announcements are scheduled from Accenture plc (ACN, graded C), McCormick & Company Incorporated (MKC, graded D), Acuity Brands Inc (AYI, graded B). Following the close of regular trading, quarterly results are scheduled from Nike Inc (NKE, graded D).

Several individual equities stand out for close observation today, led by Accenture plc (ACN), Corteva Inc (CTVA), and Jabil Circuit Inc (JBL). Accenture released fourth-quarter earnings this morning, delivering revenue of $18.68 billion and full-year earnings per share of $13.56 alongside full-year fiscal 2027 revenue growth guidance of 3% to 6%. Corteva remains in focus after a federal court denied California's bid to block the company's spinoff. Jabil Circuit remains under scrutiny after posting quarterly financial results that sparked investor focus on memory supply constraints and back-end-loaded profit margins.

Several notable price swings from Wednesday, September 30 also carry significant momentum into this morning's session. On the downside, Jabil Circuit Inc (JBL) slid 10.0% after posting quarterly financial results, while Moderna Inc (MRNA) fell 5.4% after an equity research team lowered its rating to sell following ongoing patent disputes. On the upside, Gen Digital Inc. (GEN) advanced 5.6% after executive statements clarified acquisition strategy and affirmed financial targets, while Cboe Global Markets Inc (CBOE) gained 5.2% after securing a 25-year extension on its exclusive licensing agreement for S&P 500 index options through 2051.

For an investor who holds only U.S. equities, understanding overnight foreign exchange moves is essential because currency fluctuations directly impact corporate profit statements. When the U.S. dollar strengthens against major foreign currencies, as observed in overnight trading against the euro and the yen, large American companies that generate significant sales abroad face a dual headwind. First, revenues collected in foreign currencies translate into fewer U.S. dollars when converted for quarterly financial reporting. Second, a stronger dollar makes American goods and services more expensive for overseas buyers, potentially softening international demand. In contrast, smaller or domestically focused companies that produce and sell entirely within the United States face little direct foreign exchange friction, creating divergent fundamentals across sectors when currency markets move.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
