  • Our read: NetApp Inc carried an EasyAlpha grade of C into Friday's session, reflecting average quality among Technology peers in the S&P 500 based on data through Thursday's close, pairing solid business growth with a softening price trajectory.
  • The day: Shares fell 5.1% to close at $203.80 on Friday, October 16 as enterprise hardware names retreated during a broader technology selloff.
  • Watching: Fiscal second-quarter earnings scheduled for Tuesday, November 24.

The clear pullback on Friday extended a difficult stretch for NetApp. The company fell alongside peers Dell Technologies and Hewlett Packard Enterprise as analyst downgrades questioned the near-term payoff from enterprise artificial intelligence spending. Doubts over whether heavy infrastructure investments will translate into immediate storage and server demand have weighed heavily across the sector.

That session capped an increasingly difficult week for the stock. Friday marked four consecutive declining sessions for the stock, leaving shares -14.1% over the past week on volume that reached 1.2x the 20-session average.

NetApp carried an EasyAlpha grade of C into the session, calculated from data through the prior close to place it in the middle tier of technology companies, where most stocks land. Across EasyAlpha's historical studies, companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and historically have carried a lower risk of large drawdowns than companies graded D or E.

The brightest spot in the company's profile is growth. NetApp generated +29.9% in year-over-year quarterly revenue expansion, while converting revenue into profits with a 19.2% profit margin. Even after the latest decline, the stock remains +90.3% so far this year.

Recent trading trends present a contrasting picture. After an extended run earlier in the year, the recent retreat leaves shares 15.4% below their 52-week peak. The stock trades at 28.7 times trailing earnings. Wall Street analysts also display caution: only 40.0% of covering brokerages maintain buy ratings, and their average price target sits 3.9% above Friday's close.

How grades work

Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.

  • AExcellent quality
  • BGood quality
  • CAverage quality
  • DBelow average
  • EWeakest quality
How grades work →

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
