On Monday, October 5, 58.1% of the stocks in the Utilities sector moved higher, as the cap-weighted group finished +0.4% while the equal-weighted measure closed +0.3%. The session was driven by large power producers, led by Constellation Energy Corp at +3.9% and Vistra Corp. at +3.5%. That strength lifted the Utilities Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLU), an exchange-traded fund holding $21.8 billion in assets, to close +0.3% at $39.96. That gain came despite a thin quality profile, as only 23.6% of the fund's graded weight holds EasyAlpha's top grades of A or B. The move was triggered by a federal $4.2 billion conditional loan commitment to finance nuclear plant upgrades and lifetime extensions in Pennsylvania and Ohio.

The government financing package boosted shares of nuclear and merchant power producers by offering direct capital support to expand output. The announcement aligned with broader commercial demand for clean, continuous baseload power, including a 20-year power purchase agreement with Amazon to secure 190 megawatts of nuclear output. The modest advance remained concentrated in electricity producers, while other parts of the sector lagged. Meanwhile, American Water Works closed -1.9%, and our sources show no reported driver behind the decline.

Market conditions were broadly supportive across equities, as 10 of the 11 sectors rose. Even so, the session provided only a modest lift for XLU, which is -10.5% over the past 100 sessions and -55.1% over the past twelve months.

EasyAlpha grades each company against its industry peers. Companies graded A or B have stronger fundamentals and historically carry a lower risk of large drawdowns than those graded D or E. Because only 23.6% of the sector's graded weight sits in those top two tiers, the group as a whole carries more historical downside risk than single-day policy headlines suggest.

A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
