EasyAlpha reads overall market conditions as Mixed. Low expected volatility and quiet credit markets continue to anchor the environment, making Monday a loud session driven by headline risk that left broader market foundations intact. Major indexes slipped on Monday, August 31 after renewed Middle East hostilities and military strikes pushed crude oil prices higher. Rising energy costs revived concerns over persistent inflation and higher interest rates, along with increased expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike in September.

The S&P 500 slipped -0.3%, while the Dow lost -0.7% and the Russell 2000 declined -0.6%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 held up better than the broader market, finishing unchanged at 0.0%. Trading activity was in line with recent patterns, with SPY recording volume at 98% of a typical day's volume. Market breadth was weak across the board, as only 28.2% of the 497 S&P 500 stocks advanced and 2 of the 11 sectors rose.

Sector performance tracked the geopolitical shock. Energy was the clear leader, gaining +2.1% as oil prices jumped during the session. In contrast, rate-sensitive and consumer-facing groups lagged, with Communication Services falling -1.6%. Index movers were split: Alphabet Inc Class C (-2.2%) weighed on communication services, while strong advances in Tesla Inc (+5.5%) and NVIDIA Corporation (+1.5%) cushioned large-cap technology. With no major government economic reports scheduled for the day, geopolitical headlines and bond yields drove the day's trading.

Under the surface, key risk gauges showed little signs of panic. Expected market turbulence stayed subdued, with the VIX closing at 14.4. High-yield credit spreads sat at 2.60%, reflecting quiet lending conditions. In the rates channel, the yield curve remained upward sloping, with the ten-year Treasury yield sitting +0.39 points above the two-year yield. These readings show that while daily price swings can be sharp, systemic financial stress remains absent.
