Energy led the broader market on Friday, October 23, yet the advance rests on a portfolio where only 11.9% of the fund's graded weight sits in companies graded A or B. Breadth across the sector was wide, with 85.7% of its member companies advancing, and an equal-weighted measure of the group finished +2.7% compared to +2.5% for the market-cap benchmark. Oilfield service providers did the heavy lifting inside the exchange-traded fund Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLE), which closed +2.6%, led by Schlumberger NV closing +7.1% and Halliburton Company finishing +5.2%. The move gained momentum after Schlumberger reported third-quarter earnings and revenue that topped expectations. At the same time, crude oil topped $103 per barrel.
The sector's advance came on a day when broader equity markets showed little direction, as 3 of the 11 sectors rose. While most sectors struggled to make headway, energy shares saw persistent buying. Because the equal-weighted return outpaced the cap-weighted sector, smaller companies in the group did more of the work during the session than the largest index components.
Oilfield services led the session following Schlumberger's financial release. The company topped third-quarter revenue and earnings expectations as North American revenue surged and data center operations gained momentum. That performance set a strong tone across equipment and services peers, bolstering Halliburton Company. Meanwhile, oil prices provided macro support as West Texas Intermediate crude surpassed $103 per barrel, lifting producers across the sector.
Downstream refining was a notable pocket of weakness during the session. Shares of Valero Energy Corporation finished -1.6%, diverging from upstream producers. Refiners faced pressure following reports examining what a diesel deal could mean for domestic refiners.
At Friday's close, XLE finished at $69.32. Over longer time horizons, its returns reflect the cyclical nature of energy markets: XLE stands +10.7% over the past month and +22.1% over the past six months, but sits -22.1% over the past twelve months.

How grades work
Every day we grade each company against the other companies in its sector, looking at its finances, how its stock trades, and what the market is signaling. The result is one simple letter.
- AExcellent quality
- BGood quality
- CAverage quality
- DBelow average
- EWeakest quality
A grade measures quality against the other companies in a sector, from historical data. It is not a prediction, not a price target, and not advice. A company can be graded A and still fall.
