Only 31% of the top 1000 companies closed higher on Friday, October 23, leaving the market -2.5% from its peak while 3 of the 11 sectors rose. Trading volume was light at 80% of a typical day's volume, making the session a quiet retreat that narrowed participation without disturbing broader market conditions.

The S&P 500 closed -0.5%, with the SPY exchange-traded fund ending at $759.96. The Dow closed -1.2%, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 finished 0.0%.

The primary pressure came from energy markets, as rising oil prices weighed on major indexes to close out a rocky week. The upward move in crude added broad pressure across benchmarks, keeping equities on the defensive throughout the final session of the week.

That pressure divided the market by sector. Energy finished at +2.5%, standing as the session's primary gainer as energy shares advanced. In contrast, Consumer Staples ended at -1.7%, pacing the session's decliners as defensive groups fell back.

Megacap and technology shares were mixed as investors continued reassessing the massive capital expenditures required for artificial intelligence infrastructure. In communication services, Alphabet Inc Class C closed at -1.1%, while semiconductor maker NVIDIA Corporation ended at -0.6% as trading across the tech complex stabilized.

Economic data added to the cautious tone, as household sentiment stayed near historic lows under pressure from fuel prices. With a quiet session behind them, market participants are looking ahead to quarterly earnings from major tech firms alongside an upcoming Federal Reserve policy meeting.

Beyond equities, the VIX, the market's expected-swings gauge, closed at 19.0. High-yield credit spreads finished at 3.40%, reflecting the extra yield lenders demand from risky borrowers, while the 20-day change in that spread stood at +0.60 points.
